Shapes were the focal point of week 4 and the main task was to transform my graphic into one that implements basic shapes in order to create an original piece. To start this I created a mind-map of what shapes or items a chef would typically come across, and ones that fist come to mind when the word ‘chef’ is said. There was a large number of shapes I had at my disposal. On one hand, shapes that a chef would come across on a daily basis included, sharp, block shapes which could resemble knives or other equipment and softer, rounded shapes which resemble food products. On the other hand, items and shapes which come to mind when the word chef is said tend to sway to their appearances, for example, a chefs hat or knives again.

-Final graphic of chefs hat spelling ‘chef’.

After a creating a few designs on paper, one utilised ingredients and knives to spell out ‘Olly’, however I felt that it looked quite cheap. Therefore, I decided that a chef’s hat would be the best option as it is the most stereotypical synonymous item for a chef (despite not being worn more often than not in kitchens.) I drew one roughly using simple shapes and then writing chef on the bill of the hat and was not impressed, however I realised that the word ‘chef’ could be implemented into the fabric side of the hat to create an almost optical illusion. To do this I created the shapes using the ‘shape builder’ tool and grouped all the layers together. I also decided to drop ‘Olly’ which was supposed to be written at the bottom as I felt it looked out of place.
